The purpose of the Thinking Strategically series is to bring researchers in the subject area together to discuss issues of major concern and to ensure that, as a disciplinary community, we can ensure effective, joined-up action at all levels for the future development of the study of languages and cultures.

In this session, Cathy Hampton (Warwick University) and Penny Johnson (Durham University) will discuss their research on boys’ attitudes to modern foreign language learning at KS4. In 2025, Cathy and Penny ran an online survey of c. 440 year 10 students (boys and girls) at schools who have had connections with the outreach programmes at their institutions. They will present the findings of their research, together with some initial teacher responses to these findings, as a means of generating discussion about the hopes, expectations and strategies of teachers and those working in MFL university outreach when it comes to maximizing the appeal and impact of MFL across genders.

The survey questionnaire can be found here: https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/modernlanguages/outreach/routes/boysinlang/resources/pupil_questionnaire.pdf

All are welcome to attend this free seminar, which will be held online via Zoom at 12 noon BST (UK time). You will need to register in advance to receive the online joining link which will sent automatically - please check spam/junk folders as it can sometimes go straight there.
