Talk: Lope de Vega, the Spanish Shakespeare.
Monday 17th November 2025 at 6:30pm. Open to all. No booking required. Leeds Central Library.
Prof Duncan Wheeler will be in conversation with Gonzalo Pontón talking about Lope de Vega, the Spanish Shakespeare.
In this talk you will discover more about Lope de Vega, often referred to as the Spanish Shakespeare. The author of literally thousands of plays, Lope belongs to Spain´s so-called Golden Age, one of the most fertile periods of cultural production in any culture of any time (Velázquez, Cervantes, Tirso de Molina). Professor Pontón will discuss his leadership of the ProLope group, based in Barcelona, which is committed to producing scholarly editions of all of Lope´s plays. We will also discuss how he and ProLope have combined this traditional labour with incorporating new approaches to the Golden Age such as the attention increasingly paid to work of the Afro-diaspora in Spain.
In partnership with the Instituto Cervantes.
