The ties between Leeds and its German twin city Dortmund are of long standing. Since the official ceremony back in 1969, many residents have visited and/or have hosted visitors from their twin city. As an innovative way to further promote these contacts, the Anglo-German Society in Dortmund has developed special online German courses that not only provide the basic language people require to be able to communicate when taking part in twinning activities; these specially designed courses also integrate into each lesson facts, photographs and videos of Dortmund in order to raise Leeds residents’ awareness of what life in their German twin city is like.  

This talk by Geoff Tranter, Chair of the Anglo-German Society in Dortmund and Lecturer at Dortmund Technical University, will explain the background to these courses and show examples of the materials produced.
